Tresure Hunt - AR Orientation Game Design

Why you play this Game?

It was a year, 2019, a group of students were working on a robot as a university project. They made a robot, but there was a problem which they have still. The problem is, they lost the main part of the robot, a chip, which helps the robot to start. They tried their best to find that thing but unfortunately, they could not. So, the goal of players, who play this game, is to find that chip for that group of students, help them to complete their project and start the robot as soon as possible.

What's your game flow?

This game has multiple stages which are different according to places. In this game, the player needs a mobile camera because it is an AR game so.

Figure 1 Game Flow

Note: This game flow will be change according to the team, means all teams have different game flow. Start and End points are same for all teams.

As mention above in figure, all teams have the same Start and Endpoints but all other parts of the game are different. At the start point, teams have a puzzle to solve and find a clue/code for the next stage/place to move ahead in the game. According to the given figure, the team needs to find the code that leads them to the Sopwith building (SB). The team find a task to solve at SB point. After solved, get information about that place and a code of the next stage. Next place for the team is Time Breaker which takes their time and makes them slow in the game. Student Life Centre is the first Time Breaker after SB point. This all process same for all rest of the stages/places. The team required to find clue/code and reach the next place. With this game-flow, teams travel all the main and important places of the university. Such as MB (Main Building), JG (John Galsworthy), EM (Eadweard Muybridge), Canteen (Food-store), Union of Kingston Student, Health Centre. The interesting part of this game is at the endpoint. The teams have a chance to find the main part of the robot and start the robot as early as possible. The team which arrives first and starts the robot at the endpoint, Town House. That team is the winner of this game.

This game is time base so the winner, who complete this game in less time. Stage difficulty depends on levels and Time breakers. The team reaches nearly at the final point Time breakers become more time-consuming. The team challenges have solved the puzzle and game in less time. After solving the puzzle, the team have a new place/stage to move on to the final place. After reaching the final place, the winning team has some reward from the university.

Game Character

In this game, two-character are available. First one is a virtual character, Rossie which always with the player to guide them in the game. Also, Rossie is one of the students in that group which made the robot. The second one is the robot which is not in running condition because of a chip. All players meet robot at the final point of this game.

Magic Box Prototype :

This is my prototype of the AR Orientation Game Design. I am working on this project and exploring my knowledge in AR Technologies and Unity software.

When a player start to play this game and when they open this game, What type of interface they will feel? How the magic box prototype work?. Every details show in the above video.

Process :

When you click on ARDemo application, you can see a logo of the university with Start and End buttons. When you click on start button game will start and your device camera will open. Now, your task is to scan the given logo with the help of your device camera which is open within the game app.

After scan, you can find a magic box with an open button. Click on open button. Magic Box will open. You can see a rotate paper inside of that magic box. When you click on paper, you can find another screen/interface. In that interface, all the task information given.

So you need to do the given task and follow the next step which explained in What's you play in this game?

What's you play in this game?

Figure 3 Team Symbols (Only References)

When the game starts all teams have a symbol as the given above figure 3, all teams have a different one, after a scan that symbol. They have a clue/code to move on the first stage of the game, the name is SB Game, as the given game flow in figure 1. It is a minigame, it is connected with other stages of the game so the teams required to solve/play this game.

SB Game

After arriving at the first point, Sopwith Building. The teams have a symbol of SB game. They need to scan that symbol and get information or details about SB game, how to play? what does the team need to do? in SB Game. The symbol is given in following figure 4.

Figure 4 SB Game Flow

As the given above figure, the team has some pieces of card which team need to collect, put in sequences and make a picture with the help of those cards. After that, scan that picture and get some information about that place and more information about the next place. The interesting thing about this picture, after a scan you have a virtual model of Sopwith Camel which innovated in Kingston Upon Thames by Thomas Sopwith. This is how to look after the scan that picture.

Figure 5 Virtual Model of Sopwith Camel

EM Game

As same as EM Game also work like SB Game. The team move to EM building and Scan the given symbol of EM Game. Read all the instructions given in EM Game symbol. Play game and move on next place in the game.

In the following given figure 6, the team has an EM Game symbol. After a scan that symbol team need to reach near books and start to find an animation sequence of a character. Scan all sequence images, collect information from all sequence images. Also, with this team have a code/clue for next place to move on in the game. All are mention in the following figure 6.

Figure 6 EM Game Flow

Note: Next 2 games such as MB game and JG game. Both these games work the same as EM and SB games. Also, all the process of MB and JG are the same but the topic of games are different.

Time Breakers

Time breakers are more challenges for teams. After all main games, teams have a time breaker which is more time consuming to solve and move for the next stage. In time breaker, the team has an IQ type question/puzzle to solve and get the next place code. Time breakers are different places of the university. Such as Union of Kingston Student, Canteen, Student Life Center, Health Center.

After arrive at time breaker point, the team has a logo, which is mention in the following figure 7, for the scan. In that team get a puzzle which is give in the example.

Figure 7 Time Breakers Logo

Example:

Puzzle                                                 Ans

  1. A  C  ?  G  I                                        ________
  2. D  G  J  ?  P                                        ________
  3. ((((5*3)/5)+7)-2)                                ________
  4. 3 * 2 = 18 | 5 * 2 = 50 | 7 * 2 = ?        ________

Note: (After solve this puzzles answer: EM 1098)

After solving this puzzle team have answer EM 1098 so the team need to move on EM 1098 room/place for next stage.

Game World

Figure 8 Kingston University Entry Gate

My game world for this game is Kingston University, Penrhyn Road campus. My game world is the real. It is in figure 8. In the campus, some main places play an important role as a different stage of this game. Some parent places such as Sopwith Building, Main Building, John Galsworthy Building and Eadweard Muybridge Building, are the main game stage in this game world. Some child places are there such as Canteen, Student Life Centre, Union of Kingston Student and Health Centre, at this places team has some mini-games.

This is an introduction/education an AR game in which players visit the whole university by playing this game. The team follow this all place according to figure 1, Game flow. In parent places, the team plays main games. In child places, the team plays some minigames to move ahead in this game world. Most of all places are the place where all team member visits daily in their course time. So, it is important places for them.

The following figure 9 is the map of my game world, Kingston University Campus map.

Figure 9 Kingston University Penrhyn Campus Map

In this game world, the team need to find a logo for their task and information. After get logo, they need to scan by Treasure Hunt App. to see information because it is an AR game. Team has information then they need to solve or follow the instruction which is given in that information. Find a code or clue for next stage and move ahead. At the final point, they have a real-life robot. The team who arrived first that team have a chance to start that robot and become a winner of the game.

Figure 10 Game World Map

In this game world, teams have some background music in their mobile app. Music, Wishful Thinking, is from YouTube Music library. It is theme music which is trying to engage players with the game.

How you play this game?

According to figure 1 Game flow, the start point is the same for every player who is participating in this game. At the start point, players have some choice to choose their teammates. Team members divide according to the total number of participants. After choosing teammates, all members need to go on the university website and download a given game app with the name of Treasure Hunt. After that, a small animated movie or some virtual movie show them regarding the game story. What they are doing in this game? How they play this game and Why they play this game? A logo, map and some paper provide to all teams to use in this game. After that, all teams start the downloaded app.

Figure 11 First Page of Game

This is the first page of the game when team player start game this page comes first on their devices. With this, the background music also available so player easily engage with the game. When the player start game, first see the animation of the starting page and then see this start button page with the university logo and game logo. In figure 11, the given image is just a reference. Also, a player can see one more button with a symbol, that button is for setting, to set music volume and player can push music. Some information about the game is given in setting page. Players have a different symbol according to their teams. Players need to scan that symbol and start the game. Before that, when player press on start their device camera and then player scan their team logo.

In figure 12, ‘A’ team symbol gives. ‘A’ team scan this symbol and get a new surface page. As same as, all other teams need to scan their logo and start the game. A player sees a magic box in their devices on that given logo. This game is AR so all the character and models are virtual in the game. So, players can see that magic box in their devices only. In reality, nothing is there. Tap on that magic box and that magic box open. A player sees one piece of paper in small size in that magic box. Click on that paper piece and that paper become bigger, fix according to devices screen size. In that piece of paper, players have their task/information about that particular mini game/puzzle. Player needs to solve that puzzle and find a clue for the next stage of the game.

In figure 1 Game flow, show player has some main games and some Time breakers. At all this place, the player needs to follow the same process, scan symbols, and find task and information. Solve task and puzzle, find clue and code to move ahead in the next stage of the game. The reference image about the magic box is as follow in figure 12.
